On May 10th, the ImproLANDS project, together with Europe Direct Unione Montana Marca di Camerino organised an online round table entitled Gender Inequalities in the Cultural Sector. Round Table of Experience Sharing.
The event was a meaningful platform to address gender inequalities in the performing arts sector by listening directly to the voices of female and non-binary artists and those daily working in the field, who shared their personal experiences and perspectives.
The reflections and insights that arose during the event were myriad:
- Women artists often experience misogyny when working in male-dominated groups and face more prejudices from the audience compared to their male counterparts;
- Women artists often struggle for recognition and authenticity, are taken less seriously in some working groups compared to their male counterparts, and find it hard to express their true talent and see it recognised;
- Although art is a ‘right,’ accessibility remains a challenge in many cultural spaces, It is hard to find artistic spaces in which to express one’s full talents and true self;
Trans and non-binary artists often face even higher visibility hurdles and discrimination. Many cultural spaces and groups do not accept working with trans or non-binary artists.
