Shoshin Theatre Association | Romania

Established 8 years ago, Shoshin Theatre Association derives its name from the Zen Buddhist concept of ‘beginner’s mind,’ embracing a humble, open approach even when working at advanced levels. Shoshin focuses on enhancing personal and social well-being through physical, devised, and participatory theatre, particularly in rural areas.
Over the years, it has cooperated with notable artists and groups like Milos Kecman, Odin Teatret, and Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo. Shoshin has been involved in several European projects, including the RIOTE3 project under Erasmus+, where it produced innovative outputs for adult education in rural settings. One of these, consisted of a performance co-created with locals in Mera, based on community myths and stories, thus exemplifying its commitment to blending art with local culture. As a partner in the SPARSE and SPARSE+ projects, funded by Creative Europe, the association developed three toolkits on organising cultural activities in rural areas, overcoming challenges like remoteness and language barriers through physical theatre. Its team also authored the SPARSE project’s final evaluation report, which assessed the impact on communities, artists, and audiences throught the project duration.

Its long-standing collaboration with public and private organisations has established the association as a leader in cultural and social development in Larissa and Thessaly.
Its team of researchers and trainers has developed a vast collection of adaptable educational tools for diverse communities and settings. Since 2015, the organisation has teamed up with the Centre of Prevention of Addictions and Psychosocial Health, Larissa – OKANA, creating methodologies and coordinating workshops that employ art in primary prevention.
Seeking to connect artistic improvisation with mental health sectors, SMouTh is well-positioned to develop practices and methodologies whose social impact extends beyond its geographical area of operation.

🎭 Throwback to an unforgettable night of theatre and community improvisation🎭

Let's take a moment to look back at the incredible theatre show "𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗶 𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗶 𝗱𝗶 #ImproLANDS," which took place in #Italy on Saturday, 29 June, at the Municipal Theatre of #Caldarola.

🎭This show marked the culmination of an intense week of international artistic residency, bringing together talented #artists from Greece, Romania, Spain, and local communities in Italy.

👥This unique collaboration between theatre #improvisation artists and the local communities living in the heart of the Marche #earthquake zone created a performance like no other—an engaging and deeply empathetic way of making #theatre that moved both actors and audience members alike.

🔎The evening's theme, chosen by volunteers and artists, was "the past, the present, the future." We had a blast improvising scenes about Caldarola's history, its current state, and our hopes for the future—some even dreaming of a public swimming pool as the heat rises! The performances, rich with images, rhythm, laughter, and dance, helped us confront our community's realities and potential.

#ImproLANDS has the mission to rebuild, through #improvtheatre, the social fabric and relationships in four European areas impacted by natural disasters and/or depopulation. And this show was a powerful testament to that mission. Gatherings like this are not just fun; they're opportunities to collaborate with local officials, drive positive change, and identify communities’ needs.

🎥 Watch the reel with the best moments from the performance!

⏩Currently, the second artistic residency of the project is taking place in #Spain (3-8 September), allowing us to continue and deepen the process of artistic co-creation!

✨ Exciting news: the second international residency of the #ImproLANDS project will soon take place in Spain! ✨

From September 3 to 8, 2024, ImproLANDS artists and partners from #Greece, #Romania, and #Italy will reunite in #Spain, and more exactly in the village of Miguel Ibañez, located in the #inland provinces of Segovia and characterized by strong #depopulation patterns.

The residency will allow involved partners to continue and deepen the process of artistic co-creation initiated in Italy during the first artistic residency. It will be a fantastic opportunity to:

▶️ Build on the artistic co-creation initiated in Italy, sharing, capitalizing, and refining #improvtheatre methodologies
▶️ Foster community engagement, promoting co-creation with the active involvement of #localcommunities
▶️ Explore the beautiful inland areas hosting the residency, connecting partners with local stakeholders, associations, wineries, and more
▶️ Co-create an Improv Jam Show with local communities, artists, and volunteers!

We can’t wait to see the magic unfold 🎭

A big thanks to our amazing Spanish partners and colleagues @lascosasqhacemos @improimpar @feryjzz @ernestozuazo @edumoraleda who organised the residency and will guide our co-creation work; and to the whole consortium who will travel to Spain and contribute to all activities @accademia_56 @synergyofmusictheatre @shoshin.theatre.

Stay tuned for more updates on the residency in Spain and upcoming ImproLANDS activities!

🌟 Improv Theatre Lab in Italy with Civil Protection volunteers🌟

We are thrilled to share the results of the Italian Improv Lab with Civil Protection volunteers, led in April by the talented @fabio.ambrosini451 🎭.

The group consisted of #CivilProtection volunteers from earthquake-affected areas in the Marche Region of #Italy 🌍, who have both suffered losses and provided assistance during the disaster.

Despite their extensive field experience, they had not previously had the opportunity to dedicate time to psychological training and emotional processing of their dramatic experiences. Thus, the primary goal of the workshop was to raise awareness about #communication processes in emergency and post-emergency situations while allowing a safe space for participants to share their experiences 🗣️.

The lab included 🎭 exercises on trust and care, storytelling, recognizing emotions, effective communication, embracing diversity, public speaking, and active listening—all rooted in improvisational theatre techniques.

The participants, not only enthusiastically engaged in the exercises, but also reflected deeply on their own experiences and those related to the earthquake events they endured.

A special thank you goes to @carduccitamara for making this collaboration possible!
