All courses are co-organised with TTDN, home to the National School of Improvisation Theatre, ensuring a professional standard in line with European Qualification Framework (EQF) criteria.
Accademia56 promotes socio-environmental awareness through social and physical theatre, contact improvisation, mime, and comedy therapy, engaging different audience groups. Shoshin Theatre Association | Romania

Established 8 years ago, Shoshin Theatre Association derives its name from the Zen Buddhist concept of ‘beginner’s mind,’ embracing a humble, open approach even when working at advanced levels. Shoshin focuses on enhancing personal and social well-being through physical, devised, and participatory theatre, particularly in rural areas.
Over the years, it has cooperated with notable artists and groups like Milos Kecman, Odin Teatret, and Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo. Shoshin has been involved in several European projects, including the RIOTE3 project under Erasmus+, where it produced innovative outputs for adult education in rural settings. One of these, consisted of a performance co-created with locals in Mera, based on community myths and stories, thus exemplifying its commitment to blending art with local culture. As a partner in the SPARSE and SPARSE+ projects, funded by Creative Europe, the association developed three toolkits on organising cultural activities in rural areas, overcoming challenges like remoteness and language barriers through physical theatre. Its team also authored the SPARSE project’s final evaluation report, which assessed the impact on communities, artists, and audiences throught the project duration.

Smouth | Greece

Its long-standing collaboration with public and private organisations has established the association as a leader in cultural and social development in Larissa and Thessaly.
Its team of researchers and trainers has developed a vast collection of adaptable educational tools for diverse communities and settings. Since 2015, the organisation has teamed up with the Centre of Prevention of Addictions and Psychosocial Health, Larissa – OKANA, creating methodologies and coordinating workshops that employ art in primary prevention.
Seeking to connect artistic improvisation with mental health sectors, SMouTh is well-positioned to develop practices and methodologies whose social impact extends beyond its geographical area of operation.

✨Transnational residency in Romania: a warm thank you to the local communities✨

🎭 The #ImproLANDS transnational residency in #Romania concluded last Sunday, with our international team returning to their respective countries. This residency was an enriching experience thanks to the warm hospitality of the #Magyarbikal (Bicalatu) and #Kalotaszentkirály communities, who welcomed us wholeheartedly and took part in our lab activities and show despite the winter chill.

👥We are deeply grateful to the community members who joined us, bringing energy and openness to our activities. Their participation and support made us feel at home, adding depth to our shared experiences. Special thanks go to the Kudor family, who contributed tirelessly to the organisation.

⭐ On Saturday, we held the residency's final event, where the community gathered with us to exchange ideas on the theme that has traveled with the improvisers from our Italian residency: “the past, the present, and the future.” Together, we discussed the community’s needs and hopes for the future. Improvisers performed scenes inspired by village life, nature, animals, the bustling Huedin market, and traditional dances they learned. It was a beautiful culmination of the week, celebrating the shared stories and aspirations of the community.

👩🏽‍💻Also, Friday and Saturday mornings were dedicated to our mid-term project meeting. @Accademia56 presented the project’s progress and indicators. A separate meeting with project managers focused on the upcoming reporting period and future activities.

🙌🏼 Special thanks to @feryjzz , @DimitraZacharouli, @manu.delsavio , and @bilibokapollonia for their collaboration, and to the @shoshin.theatre team for their dedication and commitment to making this residency a success.

🎥 Thanks to @gianlucabudini for capturing these memorable moments on video!

💡"Through improvisation, we rediscover the joy of connection in the unknown." – Viola Spolin

In Europe’s forgotten corners, #ImproLANDS re-establishes connection, enabling communities and artists to forge bonds through spontaneous creation.

🌍 Our transnational residency in #Romania began with a warm welcome in #ClujNapoca from @shoshin.theatre , before we transitioned to the charming village of #Kalotaszentkirály. This Hungarian-based community has been the ideal setting for deep creative work and community bonding.

The welcoming #SzentkirályPension and surrounding nature have given us a cozy space to focus and connect 🌲, while delicious breakfasts at #Muskátli Pension ☕ introduced us to local flavors and fostered camaraderie.
tasting
On Tuesday, we explored #Huedin’s market 🍅, interacting with local producers and tasting the vibrant local culture. Lunches with Iren Kudor offered even more immersion, as she shared the region’s culinary traditions.

🎭 The initial #ImprovLabs created space for artists to connect and prepare for their community work. Welcoming new members like #KaterinaBekou from SMouTH and #GabrielaChiriac from Accademia56 has enriched our group dynamics.

👥 Meeting community members, including local producers specializing in cheese, bread, kefir, and halloumi, highlighted the area’s craftsmanship traditions. One key exchange was with Misi, the village priest 🗣️, whose support has bridged the project with local culture and histories.

So far, this residency has fostered meaningful exchanges and growth in this inspiring Romanian setting.

A Special Memory from the Artistic Residency in the Marche Region, Italy:

🎶✨ In the picturesque hills of #Serrapetrona, nestled in the earthquake-affected hinterland of the Marche region, the @Azienda Agricola di Maggi & Vecchioni became the vibrant setting for a truly special gathering. International Improv theatre artists enjoyed a night filled with the lively rhythms of #Saltarello, the iconic folk music of Marche. 🌿🎭

The #artists, along with local stakeholders and #community members, shared traditional dishes and immersed themselves in the region's rich culture. With the magical songs and improvised music from @GrazieGrazià —the greatest Saltarello pranksters—the night forged a deep connection between #ImprovisedTheatre and the area’s musical traditions. The fast-paced Saltarello brought everyone together, symbolizing the #resilience and joy of local communities still rebuilding after the# earthquakes.

✨ In July, the village of Magyarbikal/Bicălatu, #Romania, experienced its first Lab as part of the #ImproLANDS project! ✨

🌍 In the heart of Cluj county lies Magyarbikal, a small, isolated village, part of Huedin city hall, where access to #culture has been scarce for generations. A small Hungarian community, part of Kalotaszeg area, that often finds itself disconnected not only from larger cultural hubs, but also from each other. This lack of connection gave the title for the Labs: "The hill that connects us". A while ago the surrounding small communities were connected by hills with a short walking distance between them. Now the network of roads and the degradation of them feeds this feeling of isolation and disconnection of the communities. Opportunities for creative expression and shared cultural experiences are few and far from these places, leaving a vacuum that ImproLANDS is aimed to fill.

🎭In this context, the ImproLANDS project brought together these communities through the art of #Improvisational Theatre. The labs are aimed to offer a sense of belonging to the inhabitants of the village and the surrounding communities, and to offer them creativity and playfulness through Impro-theatre, in order to find new ways to connect with each other.

💬Using simple, universal theatre games, participants of all ages had the chance to come together, laugh, and share their stories. These stories—about life in Bikal, their challenges, and shared experiences—became the foundation for a series of dynamic, unscripted performances.

💡This first Lab didn’t just introduce the locals to improv theatre, but also to connect to each other in a new light. As one local said, “For the first time, we saw our neighbours not just as people from the other side of the village, but as fellow storytellers.”

We’re so proud of this first experience with the community of Bikal, realized by and thanks to the amazing team of artists from @spiritwoart and locals, with the coordination of @shoshin.theatre! Stay tuned, because it’s just the beginning of more cultural engagement to come🌱.

✨Ode to Improvisation: the Heartbeat of ImproLANDS✨

At the core of #ImproLANDS, our Creative Europe project, lies the dynamic art of improvisation theatre🎭 —an expression of spontaneity, collaboration, and connection.

Through improvisation, we’re breathing life into Europe’s often-overlooked regions - remote areas, isolated places, and regions impacted by natural disasters.

But why #improvisation❓ Because it’s an art form that speaks directly to the heart of #communities, offering a platform for unheard voices, untold stories, and shared experiences. With no scripts, rehearsals, or safety nets, improvisation theatre is raw, real, and entirely shaped by the moment - it’s the ultimate expression of #creativity.

✅For the artists we work with, it’s a space to experiment, learn, and grow.
✅For the communities we reach, it’s a way to engage in meaningful cultural exchanges and foster resilience in the face of adversity.

At ImproLANDS, we believe in the transformative power of improvisation theatre to connect, inspire, and empower. Whether you’re an artist, a community member, or a lover of the arts, follow us on this journey as we use creativity to bring isolated places and vulnerable communities back into the cultural conversation 🌍🎭.

🌍While waiting to meet again our colleagues in the charming village of #Magyarbikal, Transylvania, here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable week in Spain’s inland provinces of #Segovia✨

🎬During our stay, we explored stunning areas impacted by #EspañaVaciada, or "Emptied Spain,” witnessing firsthand the effects of #depopulation in rural Spain.

👥 We connected with the local communities of #MiguelIbañez, #Torrecaballeros, #Muñopedro, and #Coca, creating deep bonds:

⏩ The week began with artists gathering at La Vía Verde in #MiguelIbañez for mutual training, thanks to the generous support of Víctor Cañamero and his parents, Manolo and Ana, who helped us meet many locals.

⏩ In #Torrecaballeros, we held an Improv lab, exchanging ideas with the mayor, @rgarciadeandres and the LGBTQI+ group @Segoentiende. We had a powerful discussion on the challenges of homophobia and discrimination in rural areas and explored ways to foster positive change.

⏩ One highlight was our day in #Muñopedro, where locals shared the village’s history and the impact of depopulation. That evening, we jammed with local artists, creating improv scenes and dancing folk music to #LaCharanga’s #Jota dance.

⏩The week ended with a trip to the stunning #Coca castle and a final performance at its theatre. The show ended with a conversation with the locals, urging for more services and incentives for repopulation.

This residency strengthened our shared mission and created lasting connections with local stakeholders, setting the stage for continued artistic cooperation in Segovia’s rural heartlands.

Next up: our final international residency in #Romania from 4th to 10th November! Stay tuned for more updates!
